Wales is not Venice! The introduction of a tax should not be covering areas such as Ceredigion that has a much lower rate of tourism compared to destinations such as Pembrokeshire, Cardiff and Anglesey. Local councils will take whatever money they can get so I’m sure Ceredigion County Council will be adopting this bill, however it is not fair for our area or our industry. I also do not think it is fair for local residents to pay a tax to enjoy a night away in their own county. Many people will stay in their own county to have a night away in a spa hotel, but we already pay our taxes for the area so why should we pay it again. Also, if a corporate guest had a meeting in Newport, why would they pay to stay their when they can stay in a hotel over the boarder without paying a tax. At a time when tourism and hospitality businesses are stretched and struggle to put our prices up even more, this is a tall order to place on small businesses. I urge you to reconsider the bill and look at the options based on figures for individual areas, not just places with high footfall.
The Regulatory Impact Assessment is set out in Part 2 of the Explanatory Memorandum (https://senedd.wales/media/g5ipwvwh/pri-ld16812-em-e.pdf). This includes the Welsh Government’s assessments of the financial and other impacts of the Bill and its implementation.
